ABSTRACT
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted economic activity across India, causing significant challenges for businesses, employment, and consumer markets. Uttarakhand, where tourism and pilgrimage contribute substantially to the state's economy, experienced a sharp decline in income due to travel restrictions and prolonged lockdowns. During the recovery phase, digital payment systems emerged as an important facilitator of commercial activities by providing secure, contactless, and efficient transaction methods. Technologies such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile banking, internet banking, and QR-code payments enabled businesses to reconnect with customers while minimizing dependence on cash. Small retailers, transport operators, hotels, restaurants, and local vendors increasingly adopted digital payment solutions to restore business operations. Government initiatives promoting Digital India, financial inclusion, and digital infrastructure further accelerated this transformation. This paper explores how digital payment systems contributed to India's economic recovery after the pandemic, with particular emphasis on Uttarakhand. Using secondary information collected from government publications, RBI reports, NPCI statistics, and academic literature, the study finds that digital payments improved financial accessibility, business continuity, consumer confidence, and transparency. Although challenges such as cybersecurity risks, digital literacy, and uneven internet connectivity remain, digital financial services have become an integral component of sustainable economic development in Uttarakhand.
